Cap San Diego - a living legend
A pearl of the Hamburg mercantile fleet is Cap San Diego. It is also known as the floating landmark of the Hanseatic city. Built in 1961 the motorised cargo-liner was primarily on scheduled service to and from South America. This is why the Cap San Diego was also called the "White Swan of the South Atlantic". After decades of use and several owner changes, the city of Hamburg bought
the ship in 1986 in order to spare the vessel from being scrapped. After years of restoration work, the ship was finally brought to its permanent berth in the Hamburg Museum port. It can be visited on the ‚"Übersee-Brücke" in the Hamburg Harbor. The historic freighter is still seaworthy and casts off for special occasions and anniversaries.
