City Hall - Rathaus Hamburg
Close to the spot where the river Alster merges lovingly into the river Elbe is the location of the City Hall. The pompous architecture, with its distinctive sandstone facade and its copper roofing was completed in 1897. For the proud citizens of Hamburg, it was natural to give the city government of the Free and Hanseatic city a representative residence -
ready to demonstrate ones status as the largest and most successful centre of the commerce and city alliance called "Hanse". Behind the impressive 112 meter high tower and the 111 meters wide facade decorated with numerous pinnacles, the city parliament still meets today. Architecturally, the city hall symbolizes the city´s self-image as "gateway to the world."
